How to choose packers and movers in Varanasi

Why “best” is a useless word here

Search for packers and movers in Varanasi and every result says best, trusted, number one, ISO certified.

None of it is checkable, most of it is written by lead-generation sites that do not own a single truck, and the firm you actually end up speaking to may be none of the companies you read about.

We are not going to add to that. What follows is nine checks you can run yourself, in under twenty minutes, on any mover in this city.

They work on us too — and at the end of each one we say plainly how we answer it, so you can hold us to the same standard.

1. Verify the GSTIN before you pay anything

Ask for the registered business name and GST number, then verify it on the government portal. It takes two minutes.

A firm that cannot produce a GSTIN cannot issue you a valid tax invoice, which means no employer reimbursement, no input credit for a company move, and a much weaker position if you ever need a consumer forum.

2. Look for a yard you could drive to

Not a mobile number and a logo. Ask where the vehicles are kept and put it into a map.

In Varanasi, a real operator has a yard on one of the wider approach roads — the old city has nowhere to park a 19 ft truck overnight.

A firm with no physical footprint has nothing to lose by disappearing with an advance, which is the single most common fraud in this trade.

3. Refuse to pay a large advance

This is the most protective rule on the list. A booking amount of 10 to 20 per cent to hold a date and a crew is normal.

A demand for half the money before anything has been packed is the mechanism behind almost every story you have read about goods being held hostage.

Never pay to a personal UPI ID or a personal bank account. Payment to an individual rather than a registered business removes nearly every avenue of recovery.

4. Get the quote itemised, in writing

Not one number in a WhatsApp message. A document with the six real cost components — transport, packing material and packing labour, loading and unloading, floor and lift access, special handling, and GST — plus the inventory it was calculated from.

A quote that hides its components is a quote that can grow once your goods are on the truck, because you have no basis on which to argue.

5. Ask what could change the price, and get the list

A professional operator can name them in about ten seconds: items added after the survey, access different from what you declared, a vehicle that cannot reach the door, and waiting time at either end.

Anyone who tells you nothing at all can change the price is either not costing your move properly or intending to re-price it after loading. Both end the same way.

6. Ask specifically about your floor and your lane

This matters more in Varanasi than in most Indian cities.

Around the ghats — Assi, Bhelupur towards Sonarpura, the lanes behind Durgakund — a truck simply cannot reach the door, and everything has to be shuttled from the lane mouth on a small tempo. That is real work and real hours.

Ask the question directly: “I am on the third floor with no lift and the truck cannot come closer than fifty metres. Is that in this price?” If the answer is vague, the charge is coming later.

7. Ask who is coming to your house

By name. Whether their identity documents have been checked. The driver, and the vehicle registration number. You are letting strangers into your home, often with family present.

Nobody in this industry offers this unprompted, so you will have to ask. The answer tells you a great deal about how the firm is run.

8. Read the one and two star reviews, not the five

Positive reviews are easy to buy. Filter to the low ratings and look for a repeating pattern — price increases at delivery, unreachable after pickup, damage denied. One angry review means nothing; the same complaint five times is the business model.

A firm with thousands of five-star reviews and no negative ones at all is more suspicious, not less.

9. Be suspicious of the cheapest quote

You will see Varanasi moves advertised from around four and a half thousand rupees, and Varanasi to Delhi from about eight and a half thousand for a two-bedroom home.

Look at what that has to cover: a 2 BHK is roughly 650 cubic feet, which needs a 19 ft truck, and the corridor is 820 km. The diesel alone costs more than the headline.

Those are not prices. They are anchors designed to get you on the phone, and the real number arrives once your goods are loaded. A quote thirty per cent below every other quote is almost always the one that will change.

A twenty-minute checklist

• GSTIN asked for and verified on the government portal
• Yard address found on a map
• Advance no more than 20 per cent, paid to a business account
• Written quotation with six itemised components and the inventory
• Written list of what could change the price
• Your floor, lift and lane access explicitly priced
• Crew names, ID verification status and vehicle number confirmed
• One and two star reviews read for a pattern
• Cheapest quote interrogated rather than accepted
