What packers and movers actually charge, component by component
Six components make up every moving quote. Once you can name them, you can tell a real quote from one that will grow after pickup.

Why one number tells you nothing
Ask five movers what a 2 BHK costs and you will get five numbers with no way to compare them. That is not an accident.
A single figure hides which services are inside it, and a quote that hides its components is a quote that can grow after your goods are on the truck.
Every honest moving price is built from the same six components. Learn them and you can interrogate any quote in about two minutes.
1. Transport
The vehicle and the driving. On a local move this is mostly a base fare for the vehicle class, because 12 km of city driving costs far less than the labour of carrying things to it.
On an intercity move it is the largest line, and it falls per kilometre as distance grows — a 1,500 km run does not cost five times a 300 km run.
Ask: which vehicle class, and is it dedicated to my goods or shared with other consignments?
2. Packing material and packing labour
Priced on volume, not on your home's size. Cartons, bubble wrap, stretch film, foam sheeting, tape, and the hours spent wrapping.
This is where packing tiers genuinely differ: an economy tier wraps furniture in film, a premium tier crates your television in wood.
Ask: what material is used on the television, the mirror and the crockery, specifically?
3. Loading and unloading labour
Crew hours at both ends. A four-person crew for a day is a real cost whether the drive is 10 km or 1,000 km, which is why a small local move is never as cheap as people expect.
4. Floor, lift and long carry
The most commonly hidden component, and the most common cause of a post-pickup argument. Carrying a wardrobe up three floors takes two people roughly four times as long as wheeling it into a service lift.
Distance from where the truck can park to your door does the same thing.
A quote that does not mention your floor has not priced your floor. It will be priced later, when your sofa is already on the pavement.
Ask this one question
“I am on the third floor with no lift, and the truck cannot come closer than 50 metres. Is that in this price?” If the answer is vague, the charge is coming later.5. Special handling
Flat fees for items that need crating, extra crew or specialist skill: large televisions, glass tabletops, mirrors, pianos, safes, aquariums, gym equipment, air conditioners needing uninstallation.
6. Insurance and GST
Transit cover is optional and priced on the declared value of your goods, typically 1.5% to 3% in India. GST on relocation services is 18% and should appear as its own line.
A quote 'including everything' that never mentions GST is a quote you cannot expense and probably cannot enforce.
A worked example
Transport dominates on an intercity move. On a local move the same table inverts, and labour plus access becomes the majority. If a local quote is mostly 'transport', something is being mislabelled.
| Component | 2 BHK, Varanasi to Delhi | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Transport (shared load, 19 ft truck, 820 km) | ₹21,546 | 62% |
| Packing material and packing | ₹2,817 | 8% |
| Loading and unloading | ₹2,545 | 7% |
| Floor and lift access (3rd no lift / 9th with lift) | ₹2,201 | 6% |
| Long carry at pickup | ₹645 | 2% |
| Special handling (15 fragile items) | ₹1,910 | 5% |
| GST at 18% | ₹5,690 | 16% |
What to do with this
- Ask for the quote broken into these six lines. A mover who cannot produce them has not costed your move.
- Confirm in writing which specific things could change the price, and by how much.
- Be suspicious of the lowest quote. A price 30% under the others is usually the one that grows after pickup.
- Never pay a large advance. A booking amount holds a date; anything more is leverage handed over for free.
